Porcelain Dental Crowns (Caps)
A crown (or cap) is a coating that covers the entire surface of the tooth and restores its original shape and size. Crowns protect and reinforce tooth structures that cannot be restored with fillings or other restorations.
While there are many types of crowns, porcelain (tooth-colored crowns) are the most popular, because they look like your natural teeth. They are very durable and will last for years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made according to size, shape, color or your teeth for a beautiful, long-lasting natural smile.
Reasons for Dental crowns:
- Broken or fractured teeth.
- Decayed teeth.
- Fractured fillings.
- Large fillings.
- Teeth that have been treated with root canal therapy.
- Cosmetic enhancement.
What does getting a Dental crown involve?
A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your initial planning process includes picking up several very accurate molds (or shapes) for your custom crown. Molds will also be used to create temporary crowns that will stay on your teeth for about two weeks until a dental office makes your new crown.
If the tooth is dry, our dentist will repair the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to fit the crown perfectly. Once these details are perfected, the view of the tooth is taken. They will put temporary cement in your temporary crown and test your bite to see if you are telling it correctly.
At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the fit, spacing, bite and colour are accurate.
You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.
