Tooth whitening is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile. No tooth preparation is needed so it is a very conservative cosmetic procedure.
Having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients. All Smiles Dental Care offer Zoom!® in-office whitening and take home whitening.
Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the new shade of your teeth.
Tooth whitening is not permanent. Touch ups are needed to maintain your result. Usually one or two applications every few months is enough. You may need to touch up more frequently if you smoke or drink coffee, tea or wine.
Although it is uncommon for patients not to get the desired result, it is impossible to predict how white an individual’s teeth will get. Some tooth shades whiten more reliably than others.
Reasons for tooth whitening:
- Normal darkening of teeth over time.
- Patients just want their teeth to be whiter.
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
All teeth naturally darken over time so whitening is a great option for many patients.
What does tooth whitening involve?
Take Home Whitening
At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays.
At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary. The trays are worn with special whitening gel once a day for 30 minutes for two weeks. It may take longer in some cases. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have completed the process.
If you have any questions about the Take Home Whitening process, please ask any member of the All Smiles Dental Care Team.
Zoom!® In-Office Whitening
Prior to treatment, we will see you for a consultation to ensure you are a candidate for Zoom!®, outline the exact procedure and sign the consent form. If you decide to proceed, we will take impressions to fabricate customs trays for future whitening touch ups.
You can expect to spend about two hours with us to complete the Zoom!® Whitening procedure. The actual whitening time is one hour.
Here is a brief overview of the Zoom!® procedure:
- Retractors will be placed to expose the entire surface of the teeth.
- The gums will be painted or covered to protect them and reduce sensitivity.
- A member of the Assisting Team will apply the whitening gel to the teeth.
- The LED light will then be applied to accelerate the whitening process.
- After 15 minutes, gel will be removed from the teeth and the mouth will be rinsed.
- More gel will be applied for another 15 minutes.
- Ideally 4 sessions of 15 minutes each is encouraged.
Most patients experience some tooth sensitivity during and after Zoom!® whitening. Our team will give you suggestions to reduce and manage any sensitivity that may occur. Tooth sensitivity will usually subside within 24-48 hours after your treatment is complete.
You will receive custom trays at this appointment so you can easily maintain your whitening result. We will provide care instructions for your teeth and trays. Keeping up with your home care and visiting our office regularly will help to maintain your beautiful, healthy, white smile.
